When the holidays roll in, many of us will celebrate the season with a little bit of wine and a whole lot of family. Between the parties, extended time off of work, and extra time with our sister-in-law, drinking too much alcohol just might become a reality. To keep the whiskey and wine from leaving you hung-over, follow these tips and stay hydrated!
Don’t Drink on an Empty Stomach
Having food in your stomach reduces the production of acetaldehyde, a chemical that contributes to the severity of your hangover. Foods that are high in fat and carbohydrates like pizza and pasta are particularly beneficial because these foods stay in your stomach for the long amounts of time, thus limiting the production of acetaldehyde and mitigating any possible hangover.
Swallow a Spoon of Olive Oil Before Drinking
Olive oil creates a protective lining for your stomach, limiting the production of acetaldehyde. If you find that swallowing olive oil is unpleasant, dip bread in olive oil to maximize taste while experiencing the benefit.
Drink Water Between Alcoholic Drinks
Alcohol is a diuretic: the more you drink, the more urine is produced by your kidneys. In fact, for every standard drink, your kidneys generate an extra 120 mL of urine in addition to the standard 60-80 mL per hour. Drinking a lot of water is important because your body only absorbs one half to one third of what water you drink, the rest is excreted through urine. Drink up!
Know Your Limit
Everyone has a different tolerance. Keep tally marks on your arm to help you remember how many drinks you’ve had. Make sure to also consider the alcohol content of your drinks. Some types of beer have alcohol content two or three times as great as other beers.
Don’t Drink Coffee
If it’s Saturday morning and you’re swearing to never drink again, this section is for you. Despite what you might have heard, drinking coffee is not how to recover from a hangover. Like alcohol, coffee is a diuretic–coffee will make your hangover worse because it will dehydrate you. Many symptoms associated with the common hangover, dizziness, headache, and thirst, can be fixed by rehydrating. Drink water. Then, drink more water. Help your body by mixing water with sports drinks which replenish electrolytes.
