It is often said that the average person needs about 9 to 12 glasses of water per day to stay hydrated and healthy. According to the Institute of Medicine, approximately 80 percent of our water intake comes from beverages while 20 percent comes from food. Acquiring that extra 20 percent is not always easy as most don’t choose their foods based on water content. However, you may be surprised that there are many hydrating foods that have the potential to quench your body’s thirst and keep you hydrated!
Hydrating foods can provide the added bonus of vitamins, minerals and nutrients. Foods containing a higher water content are often low in calories, due to having high water levels. The American Council on Exercise states that some of the most hydrating foods are:
- Peaches (fresh, frozen or canned in natural juice)
- All types of melon
- Citrus fruits
- Green beans
- Cottage cheese
- Broth based soups
- Mixed greens
If you are headed to the grocery store, stock up on these hydrating foods to help you stay hydrated through the summer heat. Here at “The Water Guy”™, we are committed to helping you stay healthy and hydrated but remember despite these hydrating foods, there is no perfect replacement for H2O.
As always, you should consult your healthcare provider or a nutritionist to figure out your body’s exact needs.
